Bhagat Ramanand (Punjabi: ਰਾਮਾਨੰਦ ਜੀ), also known as Swami Ramanand, was a Gurmukh, poet, saint, and devotee whose compositions are included in the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, now known as the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He is historically remembered as a Vaishnav saint and is often considered the reviver of the Bairagi sect, which later became known as the Ramanandi Sampradaya.

His bani (hymns) in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji reflects acceptance of Gurmat thought and emphasizes the realization of God within, beyond ritual worship.

Historical Facts about Bhagat Remanand in Guru Granth Sahib

Although Ramanand is popularly regarded as a Vaishnav saint, his bani preserved in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji reflects a departure from external Ram-bhakti towards Gurmat principles, such as the realization of God within, rejection of ritual idol worship, and liberation through the Guru’s Shabad. In this way, his hymn represents a bridge from Vaishnav traditions into the spiritual vision of Gurmat. One can study following hymn:

Raamaanand Jee, First House:

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
Where should I go? My home is filled with bliss. My Innerself does not go out wandering. My mind has become crippled. ||1||Pause||
One day, a desire welled up in my mind. I ground up sandalwood, along with several fragrant oils.
I went to Brahm(God's) place (Temple), and worshipped Him there. That God showed me the Divine Wisdom, within my own mind. ||1||
Wherever I go, I find water and stones. You are totally pervading and permeating in all.
I have searched through all the Vedas and the Puraanas. I would go there, only if the Lord were not here. ||2||
I am a sacrifice to You, O True Divine Wisdom Giver. You have cut through all my confusion and doubt.
Raamaanand's Lord and Master is the All-pervading Brahman (God). The Word of the Guru's Shabad eradicates the Karma (Actions) ||3||1||
