In Gurmat, Kāriā̃ Rātā̃ or Black Nights refers to the state of spiritual darkness in the world when true wisdom (gian) is absent and only illusion (bhram) is preached. Kabir describes it as: '''Black Night''': When society is filled with ignorance and false preaching of maya, it becomes a black night. '''Kaale Jant''': People (jant) are called kaale (dark/ignorant) because they chase desires (ichhā pūri karniyā̃). '''Noose of Maya''': With the noose of maya around their neck, they run blindly in the storm of desires. '''Judgment of Bhagwant''': The Divine within eventually destroys such beings when they fail to achieve anything through maya, and they realize the futility of their path. Thus, Kāriā̃ Rātā̃ symbolizes an age or condition of collective ignorance, where people remain trapped in desire and are cut off from true spiritual light. [[Category:Gurmukhi Dictionary]]
